Getting Ready For Your Tutoring Appointment

In order to get the most out of tutoring, you need to come to the session prepared.  Here are some tips to help you.

  1. Plan ahead. Know your exam dates and assignment deadlines. Sign up for a tutoring session as soon as you begin to struggle with the course material. Even a quick “check-in” with a tutor can help make sure you’re on track.
  2. Write everything down. By the time you arrive at your tutoring session you may have forgotten that question you had last week…get into the habit of writing down your questions as they come to you—in class or while you’re studying—and bring them with you when you meet with your tutor.
  3. Work on problems on your own before your tutoring session. This will help you know what questions you need to ask and use your tutoring time more efficiently.
  4. Leave detailed notes for your tutor on TutorTrac. When you book a session on TutorTrac, be sure to let your tutor know what you’re hoping to work on for that meeting.
  5. Come prepared. Bring all your course materials with you to the tutoring session, even if you think you may not need them. This includes any books, notes, syllabi, and the instructor’s notes and written feedback.
  6. Speak up if it’s not working. The tutors want you to succeed! Communicate with them about your learning style. If you don’t understand what your tutor is explaining, let them know so they can try a different approach.
  7. Be patient, be flexible. Your tutor is a student, too! Be kind to your tutor and to yourself. Communicate any changes or cancellations as soon as you’re aware of them, and be willing to schedule another session if you need more help.
  8. Know what to expect. Before making an appointment with a tutor, check out the “What To Expect From a Tutoring Session” page. If you need more information, or have questions about working with a peer tutor, please email us at [email protected].
